MUSIC FOR KIDS (3 - 6 YEARS)

MUSIC FOR KIDS (7 - 13 YEARS)

In refugee shelters there is a very diverse group of small children. Children from different countries learn to interact with each other. Their life situation offers little peace and structure. They are still fully learning their own mother tongue and often they do not master the new language of the host country. Music therapeutic sessions stimulate them to connect with themselves and the other. Music is a language they should not learn. It is there to stimulate their new language.

Unaccompanied minors

Adults

In the reception centers there is a large group of unaccompanied minor refugees. A very vulnerable group. Young people who are looking for their own identity and who have to do so in a very complex situation. There is little ground under their feet. They are separated from their parents and family, in a country with a different culture and language. This creates a lot of tension. Many have to deal with emotional and behavioral symptoms.
Music therapeutic sessions offer great added value for this group. They can release pent-up emotions during a drum power session or give shape to their frustrations in a self-made rap.

Many adults, especially single men, stay in the shelters. Many travel alone, in order to apply for family reunification as a recognized refugee. The women present often came along with their families. Only a few women are single. Because the risk for a woman to flee is greater. They are all under great stress. They left everything behind and ended up in uncertainty. They have to rebuild their lives in a new community.

Adults generally enjoy taking part in the music sessions. It breaks through the daily grind and worries and helps them to take their mind off things.
